Thomas 's Story
Life
Everyone from the late 60's probably knew the Belmont Hill Standard Oil gas station. This was to be my work site for the next 3 yrs. Next, the U.S. Army for 3 yrs. After the military I began working construction which led to a job in Saudi Arabia where I worked for almost 4 yrs. Traveling to Jordan, England, France, Spain, Denmark, Holland, Egypt and Austria during my breaks from work. I returned to Orlando, Fl. joining the Painters Local 1010. This led to refurb. work at Launch Pad B at the Kennedy Space Center. I hired in with Lockheed (United Space Alliance) & have now worked here for 25 yrs. I am in the Corrosion Control Dept. and have passed the National Assoc. of Corrosion Engineers tests. I am now certified to inspect any kind of paint or coating job anywhere in the world.
I am happy and satisfied with my marriage and life. I have 3 grown children with 7 grandchildren. At home my defense is a 4.2 lb Yorkie named "Ringo". If I'm not working the yard you may see me rolling on my Harley. I regret the passing of Columbia. I had the priviledge of sitting in the Commanders seat of this shuttle while it was in the OPF.
My mother and dad moved back to Hoptown the spring of '02. My dad developed Alzheimer's. My mom brought him home to stay. My aunts N. 41 "Rock Cafe" has now been torn down and I miss it. I will return to Hoptown when I retire, about 2012 if the hurricanes don't force me sooner. Some may have seen the article about me in the New Era Sept 14 2004. I visit at least twice a year if possible.
My wife Deborah Sanders attended Lyman High School for those from Lyman that see my name there.
Workplace
As a teenager I always felt like I would end up being a mechanic. My father was a union painter & I had other interests. I worked at the Standard Oil Station for 3 yrs before becoming a wheel & track mech. in the Army. After discharge I worked for KAP Inc. The company tested & coated brass on steel wire for...Expand for more
radial tires. I would test these for coating thickness & rubber adhesion. Using a spectrophotometer, scales, dissolving the coating, weighing the results ect. It was fun.
My dad called me saying a major co. he had worked for needed painters in Saudia Arabia & off I went. What a 4 yr trip that was! I returned to the U.S. & joined the Orlando Painters Local 1010 which in turn led to the job I have now at United Space Alliance. I fell into my fathers trade with just a phone call.
This is not your living room or bathroom type of painting. I am in Structural Steel, been right off the top of the VAB bldg. right down throught the American flag. Top of the launch pads, water tanks, bridges even helped paint EPCOT at WDW in Orlando. I operate forklifts, high rangers, JLGs, spiders just to name a few. But I can't wait to retire. Come on LOTTO
Military
On a late eve in Titusville, Fl. my younger brother Bud & I caught a greyhound bus to Jacksonville, Fl. staying overnight at the Heart of Jacksonville Hotel & leaving there the morning of Feb 4 1972 arriving at Fort Jackson, S.C. about 3 A.M. to a series of tests while we were still half asleep.
My brother had below the shoulder length blonde hair & led the group in the get our 1st haircut. A little off the sides please. Yeah Right ! Basic was rough but I came out at 195 lbs of muscle from the scrawny 157 lb I went in at.
From AIT I traveled to Fort Benning, Ga. where they stationed me until I was discharged in 1975. I was a mechanic with the 2/10 field artillery unit. The unit was made up of 105 mm towed howlitzers, M60 tanks along with 1/4, 1 1/4, 2 1/2 & 5 ton trucks. The last year I was in we went to the field at least 3 days a week training to go anywhere at anytime & set down ready to do battle anywhere in the world Within 36 hrs. THIS got old real quick. Just before orders were cut for me to go to Germany my son Michael was born. He saved me from going overseas. I Thank Him.
